The Scarborough Crit series finished up this week with Seth Haskell (Cat 4) there to take 2nd place of the day, plus two of the 3 preems. In doing so he managed a top 6th  placing for the series with Liam Somers (Cat 4)  defending his 1st place overall in the series.

On Sunday May 24th was the Westside pro/am ride. The course was 31 miles with 2 categorized KOM's (the second of which was a 18-20% Monster). The MIT, Northeastern Univ and the entire Mathews Cycling teams were out looking to do some damage in the race. The field of 68 riders quickly whittled down to about 40 after the first climb and then blew apart at the second climb with only ½ of the pack staying together over the top. Liam Somers (Cat 4)  hung in over the climb and stayed with the front pack. After another 6 miles of rolling terrain the race finished on a huge downhill where speeds hit 44.3 mph. Liam was sitting at the 10th wheel coming into town and took a flyer with another racer at the ½ mile mark. Both made it to about 400 meters before the chasing pack caught back on.  Liam Somers held on for 7th place (2nd place in his category)

Monday May 25th  brought one more race on the holiday weekend with the Cape Able Classic. The course is a 5 mile circuit in Kennebunk, ME with a 2 miles of rolling uphill (2-4% grade) to the finish.  The race is 5 laps. The New England Colavita Team was out in force with (6-7 guys and 2 gals). After a few laps of moderate racing speeds, the pace picked up on lap 3 when a few other riders tested the fields legs with mini flyers. All attacks were quickly neutralized.  Entering the last 2 miles  the Colavita team was prominent up front sitting 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th ...at about ½ mile to go a flyer went away and Liam Somers (Cat 4)  chased it down and sat on the wheel trying to gain an advantage on the pack. Seth Haskel (Cat 4) soon followed and both Seth Haskell (Cat 4) and Liam Somers (Cat 4) ended up 1st and 2nd on the day.

The New England Team did a great job!  Thank you to Liam Somers for providing the race report on this weekend of racing.

On Saturday May 16th  The Colavita New England Team was back at it this weekend racing the Sunapee Road Race.  The course consists of a 22 mile loop around Lake Sunapee with a total elevation gain of 1320 ft per lap and a climbing finish.

For a second week in a row Dan Vaillancourt from the Colavita Men's Pro Team took 1st place in the Men's Pro 1-2-3 race.  Dan looked relaxed at the finish as he held close to a minute gap over the field.  Dan lives in Saco Maine, and has been making several appearances on the New England Race circuit. We look forward to seeing him at future races in New England.

Congratulations to Kristen Gohr as she advanced her category standings to a Cat 1 with a second place finish in the women's Pro 1-2-3 Cat. The women's team powerhouse was  clipping at the heals of the first place finisher. (see Kristen's race report below) Lydia Mathger (Cat 3) had a strong performance finishing in the 4th spot.

The Men's team Jason Moriarty (Cat 3) dropped the hammer on the finishing climb and finished in the 11th spot.  Jason recently advanced to Cat 3 and has shown he can handle to 3's with ease.  Julian Gent (Cat 3) had a strong performance keeping pressure on the lead group and making the Colavita presence known in the pack.

Women's Race Report Provide by Kristen Gohr (Cat 1)

It was another perfect day for a bike race.  The Women's Pro 1-2-3 field was small with only 17 starters.  I launched the attack on the first climb. This created a brake of 4 riders including my team mate Lydia Mathger that wouldn't be caught. Leah Davidson (Maxxis) got a good jump on me going into the final climb that I wasn't able to catch.  I crossed the line in second place.  Lydia finished strong in 4th  place. Thank you to my coach, Rich Cohen (Cat 5) and Danielle Fischer (Cat 3) for being at the finish line  The three clocked 130 miles to get there to support the team! Thanks again guys!

Liam Somers (Cat 4) has been dominating the Scarborough Crit series over the past several weeks.  Liam placed 1st in the last four races.  Liam now is currently sitting in first place in the overall series.  Seth Haskell (Cat 4) has been helping Liam maintain his overall standings.  The two powerhouses have been working together putting on a great show in the series demonstrating their strength and speed.

Race Report Provide by: Liam Somers (Cat 4)

The 8 week crit series is raced on a four corner, 1.1 mile course, that is famous for the brutal headwind on the backstretch.  The field typically consist of 25 riders  racing at speeds up to 30+ mph, with many rapid accelerations. The first few weeks were spent getting our legs back under us for Crit racing and figuring out who we wanted to attack in the series.

From there we have raced tactically to ensure no favorites were able to make any breaks that we didn't counter and we have tried to keep the pack broken up as much as possible to get us more room on the final sprint. Seth has been doing hard man work on the front, drilling the pace for 3-4 laps at a time, stringing out the group and making the other teams work to counter. I have kept up front and maintained a watchful eye on the top 3-4 riders to make sure no gaps occur. The last sprint has been close each week with all of us taking turns leading it out from about 700 meters to go (coming around the final turn). Final sprint speeds hit the high 30's (I hit 37.8 mph last week) and we have had 4 very close finishes that I have been fortunate enough to get my wheel across the line first each time.

Right now I have a 3 point lead (at 28 pts) going into the 7th week (points are awarded for the top 6 places as follows 6 pts for 1st, 5 pts for 2nd, 4 pts for 3rd etc..). The second and third place riders have 25 pts and 18 pts respectively. I need to try and win this week to ensure a victory in the series, as I am unable to race in week 8 (as is the guy in 2nd place, so that helps). If I can get a first place finish I will wrap up with 34 pts which will solidify my series placing.

So, we have a big week coming up with two other teams hungry to put an end to the New England Colavita Team's domination at the front of the group. We'll do our best to put the final nail in the coffin though ;)

On Saturday May 9th  The Colavita New England Team was out in force at the 15th Annual Sterling Road Race.  It was a perfect day for racing with temperatures in the 70's.  The course was an 8 mile loop with over 550 ft of climbing per lap.  The majority of the climbing was the 11% ascent at the finish line.

Dan Vaillancourt from the Colavita Men's Pro Team took 1st place in the Men's Pro 1-2 race.  Dan's strength is climbing, so this course was well suited for his domination of the field.  Dan looked relaxed in the breakaway which held a 1 minute plus gap over the rest of the field.

The Women's team continued to demonstrate their power.  Kristen Gohr (cat 2) finished 2nd in the Women's Pro 1-2 category.  Kristen was part of a two person break that finished over 2 minutes ahead of the main pack.  Danielle Fischer (cat 4) place 2nd in the Women's 4 field.

The Men's team competed in several categories making a good showing of the Colavita Colours.  Julian Gent (Cat 3) Jason Moriarty (Cat 3) Chris Raymond (Cat 3)  Robert Vaughan (Cat 4) Bryon Lewis (Cat 4) Seth Haskell (Cat 4) and Rich Cohen (Cat 5) had strong race performances.
